Chen earned her MFA at University of Missouri–Columbia in 1994 and taught in the Department of Applied Arts at National Defense university from 1995 to 2013. Engaged in painting creation for over 40 years, Chen’s oil paintings emphasize a simple layout of linear elements, distinct from the block structure of thick oil paints. Her pursuit is an effect of lightness, transparency and discontinuity, an elegant and lyrical oriental painting language. Chen, by means of linear structure, creates her personal artistic space and clearly expresses simplicity, transparency, fluency and a yearning for life rebirth. Chen has held more than 20 domestic and international solo exhibitions and been invited to participate in many group shows.

Chen Shun Chin’s Oil Painting Creation

These cheerful bundles of lines, embracing and binding each other, illusory or realistic, tight or loose, solid or abstract, demonstrate a tune of life.

Shun-Chin Chen emphasizes simple layout of linear elements, distinct from the block structure of thick oil paints. Her pursuit is an effect of lightness, transparency and discontinuity, an elegant and lyrical oriental painting language.

Techniques support painting effects, and painting effects are connected to painter’s thoughts and emotional transmission. As mentioned in “Thought in Art” (Rodin on Art and Artists), the form which it (art) creates ought only to furnish a pretext for the unlimited development of emotion.

The artist is suggesting emotions to the audience by means of painting.

“When I was young, I often unconsciously drew a lot of parallel lines on papers, either in classes, during chats or phone conversations or simply when sitting alone. I extremely enjoyed the pure fun of hatching!” Shun-Chin Chen said, “Till today, my layout of hatching not only expresses transparency, comfort and romance, but also a search for simplicity, order and the tendency of life to return to nature.”

To quote Wassily Kandinsky, “In their pursuit of the same supreme end, Matisse and Picasso stand side by side, Matisse representing color and Picasso form.”

And Shun-Chin Chen, by means of the lines in her paintings, is sorting out this intense world and people’s chaotic thoughts.
